What is a DEXA scan?

A DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) scan is a quick, painless, non-invasive test that uses low-dose X-rays to measure bone mineral density, helping to detect early signs of osteoporosis and other bone conditions. It’s the gold-standard diagnostic tool recommended by NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) for assessing fracture risk.

Accurate detection of bone loss  ‐  Gives a clear picture of your bone strength so you can take action early

Helps prevent future fractures  ‐  Knowing your risk means you can protect yourself before problems develop

Minimal radiation exposure  ‐  The scan uses a very low dose of radiation – much less than a standard X-ray

Simple and comfortable procedure  ‐  You’ll just lie back and relax while the scan takes only a few minutes

You may be suitable for DEXA scan if:
  • You're a woman between 50 and 80 with an additional risk factor
  • You're a man between 65 and 80 with an additional risk factor
  • You have a family history of osteoporosis
  • You have risk factors like low calcium intake, sedentary lifestyle, or certain medical conditions (eg rheumatoid arthritis)
  • You have experienced a previous fracture

How long does the scan take?

The scan typically takes 10 to 20 minutes, and the entire appointment is simple and non-invasive.

How do I prepare for a DEXA scan?

Wear loose, comfortable clothing without metal (such as zips or buttons). Bring your medical history and a list of any medications you.

Do I need a referral to book a scan?

No, self-referrals are accepted at Spire Healthcare for Bone Health Checks.

What happens after the scan?

You'll have a consultation with a GP to discuss your results and receive personalised recommendations on maintaining or improving your bone health.
