MBBS, BSc(Hons), MRCP, MD (Res), CCDS
I am a consultant cardiologist with a specialist interest in heart failure, advanced pacing and cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging working at University Hospital Southampton. I also hold a weekly clinic and ward round at Lymington Hospital as a visiting cardiologist.
My interests include general cardiology and permanent pacemaker implantation. My special interests include cardiomyopathy (heart muscle disease), cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, cardiac resynchronisation therapy (a specialised form of pacemaker designed to improve heart function) and defibrillator implantation (a device to prevent sudden death). I am the elected chairman of the web committee for the international Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance.
I trained at St Georges Hospital Medical School and graduated in 2001. I worked as a junior doctor in the south of England before commencing cardiology training in the London Deanery. I undertook much of my training at The Heart Hospital which is part of University College London Hospital and is a national referral centre for heart muscle disease. During my heart failure training I specialised in advanced pacemaker/defibrillator therapy (acquiring the internationally recognised Certified Cardiac Device Specialist accreditation) and cardiomyopathy at the Heart Hospital. In 2007, I was awarded a British Heart Foundation clinical research training fellowship.
My MD thesis was undertaken at University College London in Cardiac MRI during which I developed and clinically validated a new method for the quantification of scarring in heart muscle. This led to the two Young Investigator Awards - one national and one international.
I have a strong research record in cardiovascular magnetic resonance and cardiomyopathy, with a number of high impact publications, book chapters and prizes. I have also been invited to give international talks in my area of research.
