Virtual consultations:
I am a Consultant Dermatologist at Spire Leeds Hospital with expertise in the field of skin cancer, and in particular, the diagnosis and management of melanoma. At my Spire Leeds clinic, I offer this expertise, along with a bespoke mole assessment and mapping service - seeing anyone who is worried about a single mole through to patients with hundreds of atypical moles and or a family history of melanoma. The detailed and thorough assessment is carried out in a calm and unrushed manner and will focus on you and your skin cancer risk factors. Through education, I empower my patients to confidently be able to monitor their skin and recognise melanoma early.
I also diagnose and manage sun damaged skin through to all other skin cancers, either medically or surgically and I have 15 years of skin surgical experience. I continue to practice general dermatology and consult on all types of skin problems ranging from acne, eczema and psoriasis through to all types of rare and challenging skin conditions.
I completed my undergraduate medical training at the University of Edinburgh in 2002, and later went on to specialise in dermatology in Glasgow. I was awarded a prestigious Wellcome Trust Research Training Fellowship to complete a PhD at the CRUK Beatson Institute of Cancer Research, with the results published in a world-leading journal as well as national and international newspapers and blogs. This research has helped to further develop our understanding of how melanoma cells communicate and spread.
Since finishing my training, I have worked as a Consultant Dermatologist in York, where I was Skin Cancer Lead for five years and pioneered teledermatology in the region, alongside specialist melanoma work in Leeds. In 2019, I transitioned to Leeds, to expand my work in the specialist mole (pigmented lesion) assessment and melanoma clinic where we manage the most complex and high-risk cases across Yorkshire. I developed and lead the injectable gene therapy (TVEC) service there, which is the first of its kind for any cancer group in the region.
In addition to my work with patients, I continue to carry out clinical and academic research, teach locally, nationally and internationally and have consulted on a BBC melanoma documentary.
I am currently chairing the development of national immunotherapy guidelines and helping to shape innovative virtual referral pathways for patients. I am in the process of opening and running an important trial investigating the ability of simple blood tests to detect microscopic recurrences of melanoma alongside standard practice and I am a member of the Trial Management Group for this potentially ground breaking international study. I am also keen to increase public awareness and understanding about skin cancer and continue to work with local news outlets, charities and schools to do this.
