"I believe that every patient should be treated as if he or she was a member of your own family, and then it becomes easier to deliver the very best care."
Specialises in
I am an expert consultant dermatologist specialising in the diagnosis and treatment of inflammatory skin diseases (psoriasis, dermatitis, acne, urticaria and rosacea), and skin cancers including moles and melanomas. I also have a special interest in diagnosis and management of various types of hair loss (alopecia) and provide Diphencyprone immunotherapy for alopecia areata. In addition I provide topical immunotherapy for viral warts and verrucas resistant to treatment.
I worked as a substantive NHS consultant dermatologist in The University Hospitals of Leicester for seven years during which time I led the phototherapy service, regional alopecia service and co-led the supraregional dermato-oncology service and East Midlands Clinical Research Network. Clinically trained in the United Kingdom, I have worked in the UK since 1999 at major teaching hospitals in Cambridge, Newcastle, Nottingham and Leicester and am currently an Honorary Senior Lecturer at De Montfort University, Leicester.
I began my research career with a PhD at Edinburgh University in the enthralling field of cancer immunology and have since published over 40 peer-reviewed research papers and reviews. I have also published over 100 clinical, research and review papers and abstracts in prestigious medical and dermatological journals on the diagnosis and management of skin diseases including psoriasis, urticaria, acne and skin cancers. I continue to believe that research is very important as it widens a clinician's horizons and contributes to improving patient care.
I founded, led and chaired the Leicester Dermatology Forum and have lectured at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School, on the IQ Vantage course for dermatology and rheumatology, at the East Midlands Medical Education Cross Specialty IMID meeting, Keynote conferences, GP training courses and GP Masterclasses. I have published chapters in several medical and dermatology textbooks including ‘Cancer Vaccines and Immunotherapy’ and I regularly advise BBC Radio, television and press on the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of various skin conditions including skin cancers. I am the Spokesperson for the British Skin Foundation and the Media Spokesperson for the British Association of Dermatologists.
I have received the following Awards: UK Dermatology Clinical Trial Network Awards in 2016, UK Clinical Research Network funding, P&G Travel Award, British Association of Cancer Research Travel Fellowship and The University of Edinburgh Faculty of Medicine Cancer Research Fund grant.
