"The oncology and cancer specialist nurses at Spire Leeds Hospital are a great team to work with. They are dedicated and compassionate, providing excellent care for patients undergoing anti-cancer treatments."
I am a consultant medical oncologist, specialising in the treatment of women with breast cancer and gynaecological cancers.
I provide treatment for women at all stages of their disease, for newly diagnosed patients, as well as for those with recurrent or metastatic disease. These treatments include chemotherapy, hormone therapies, as well as new biological and molecular targeted treatments, such as Herceptin (trastuzumab), Perjeta (pertuzumab), Kadcyla (trastuzumab-emtansine), Ibrance (palbociclib), Kisqali (ribociclib), Avastin (bevacizumab), Lynparza (olaparib) and Zejula (niraparib). Increasingly molecular and genetic tests on blood and tumour samples are able to guide the choice of treatment for each individual, and I am able to provide these tests at Spire Leeds Hospital.
I work within the gynaecology and breast cancer multi-disciplinary teams at the Leeds Cancer Centre, working with teams of specialist surgeons, pathologists, radiologists and nurses.
I am active in clinical research, and am involved in a number of current clinical trials of treatments for breast cancer and gynaecological cancers.
I studied medicine at Leeds University, qualifying in 1992. I trained in general medicine in Leeds and York, and then completed my oncology training in Leeds and the surrounding hospitals in West Yorkshire. I undertook research training as a Translational Research Fellow and Clinician Scientist for the Imperial Cancer Research Fund and Cancer Research UK, in London. I completed my PhD in 2000, studying the molecular mechanisms of treatment for melanoma skin cancer. I became a consultant in 2003, initially working in York and Harrogate, moving back to Leeds in 2007.
