PhD, MSc, BA
I have over 20 years experience working as a Speech and Language Therapist. I have worked both within the NHS and in an independent practice, and I have also lectured and been a clinical tutor for undergraduate and postgraduate students. I have a keen interest in neurological communication disorders in adults, as well as voice disorders.
At Spire Bushey Hospital, I see people with voice disorders (caused for example y vocal nodules, muscle tension, vocal fold paralysis and so forth). I also see people with acquired communication disorders (for instance, following stroke, head injury, Parkinson's disease). I also work with people who have dyspraxia, auditory processing disorders, or other communication difficulties that have persisted since childhood, manifesting as word finding problems or difficulties in expressing themselves.
I am a Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT) trained clinician, which is a gold standard therapy approach for communication problems in Parkinson's disease. I am also a member of the British Voice Association (BVA) and the lead coordinator of the ASLTIP North-West London/Herts adult neuro local group.
I have a person-centred approach to assessment and management, with sessions lasting up to an hour, allowing for questions and concerns to be fully addressed. Session times and days can be arranged to suit personal preferences.
Some of the principal treatments carried out by Dr Debbie Bethlehem at Spire include:
