Dr Jaydeep Sarma

Consultant Cardiologist

MA (Hons), MB BChir (Cantab), PhD (Edin), FRCP (Lon)

I am a highly experienced, trusted cardiologist who provides cardiac care for both common and complex heart conditions. I specialise in general and interventional (keyhole) surgery to treat coronary artery disease, valve and structural heart disease, heart failure, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and arrhythmias.

I undertake a wide range of complex percutaneous (keyhole) procedures, including stenting of narrowed and blocked heart arteries and valve treatments. I have expertise in advanced techniques, including intravascular ultrasound, optical coherence tomography, rotational atherectomy and intra-vascular lithotripsy.

I have been an invasive cardiologist since 1996, and have performed in the region of 10,000 coornary angiograms, and over 4000 coronary angioplasty procedures.

I introduced percutaneous transcatheter mitral valve repair to Manchester in 2010, and implant TAVI valves for aortic stenosis. I have special expertise in the keyhole management of failing mechanical heart valves, when repeat open heart surgery cannot be performed.

I offer regular outpatient clinics where I provide comprehensive care for patients with heart problems including chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, blackouts, high blood pressure and palpitations

As well as treating heart problems with medication, I perform minimally invasive interventional procedures to treat conditions affecting coronary arteries and heart valves (structural heart disease). These treatments use imaging guidance and catheter-based techniques to improve safety and clinical outcomes for patients.

I am an NHS Consultant Cardiologist at the North West Heart Centre, Manchester University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, one of the UK's top cardiac centres, providing specialist cardiac services to over three million people and the heart transplant service for the North West of England.

I am one of the dedicated team of interventional consultants offering the 24/7 NHS service treating heart attacks for the population of greater Manchester. I offer emergency procedures to open blocked arteries during a heart attack or after a cardiac arrest.

I am part of a team delivering over 300 TAVI procedures per year, and have been performing Mitral keyhole repair procedures since 2010.

I have held managerial roles in Manchester as Clinical Director and Lead for Cardiology Clinical Governance. I am the Joint Clinical Lead for the Cardiovascular Division of Health Innovation Manchester, which delivers Manchester's Academic Health Sciences Centre programme. I am a founding council member for NHS England’s North West Clinical Senate, and has led hospital service reviews on behalf of NHS England.

I am the course director for the Catheter Lab Emergency Medical Simulation (CLEMS) Course, and co-authored recent guidelines on the management of emergencies in the cardiac cath lab. I was a member of the British Cardiovascular Society programme committee until 2022, contributing to the organisation of the UK’s main general cardiology professional development event. I continue to train and teach at national conferences, in Manchester and through the UK.

I have undertaken advisory work for NICE, contributing to national guidelines, patient pathways, and health technology assessments.

I am a medicolegal Expert Witness working with one of the UK’s leading chamber of clinical expert witnesses.
