I am a Consultant Cardiologist and I treat both inpatients and outpatients and annually I see approximately 1,000 outpatients and look after 250 inpatients. I am able to provide a comprehensive service in all aspects of general adult cardiology including the assessment of patients with chest pain, palpitations, breathlessness, blackouts, light headedness/dizziness, peripheral oedema, and impaired exercise capacity. I manage patients with conditions such as high blood pressure/hypertension, high cholesterol, heart failure, coronary artery disease, angina, heart attack, heart rhythm disturbances (including atrial fibrillation/flutter), heart valve disease and diseases of the pericardium (including pericarditis).

I carry our around 250 diagnostic angiograms per year and between 200-250 coronary shunting procedures and am considered to be a high volume operator by the British Cardiovascular Interventional Society. To date I have performed over 3,000 coronary shunting procedures. My results are closely audited and are publically available on the British Cardiovascular Interventional Society website.

I was appointed as a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at Southend Hospital and the Essex Cardiothoracic Centre at Basildon Hospital in 2008 and Honorary Senior Lecturer at Anglia Ruskin University in 2011. Currently, I am the lead cardiologist for audit and research at The Essex Cardiothoracic Centre and sit on the British Cardiovascular Interventional Society Research Committee and the British Cardiac Society Clinical Guidelines Committee.

I qualified from Guy’s Hospital Medical School, London in 1997, and trained in cardiology at St Bartholomew’s and The London Chest Hospitals up until 2008. During my training I studied for a PhD qualification at Jesus College, Cambridge University, researching a novel way of imaging patients with atherosclerosis.

Whilst at St Bartholomew’s and The London Chest Hospitals, I gained considerable experience in the treatment of patients with coronary artery disease suffering with angina and heart attacks. In particular, I learnt how to treat blockages in the coronary arteries by way of coronary angioplasty/stenting.

At Southend Hospital I lead the undergraduate cardiology teaching program for medical students from St Bartholomew’s and The Royal London Hospitals.

I strongly believe that doctors participating in clinical research make better clinicians. Therefore to compliment my clinical practice, I lead an active research program at the Essex Cardiothoracic Center, concentrating predominantly on therapeutic hypothermia in cardiac arrest and heart attack patients, comparing coronary stenting with tablet therapy for patients with angina, and the assessment and treatment of patients with long standing coronary occlusions. My team has published several scientific studies in highly respected peer-reviewed scientific journals and delivered presentations at both national and international meetings.

Outside of medicine I spend most of my spare time with my wife and three children. Together we enjoy walking the dogs and participating and coaching in various sports; including rugby, swimming and horse riding. Like most human beings, I also enjoy socialising with friends, especially over a home cooked meal!
