I am a Consultant Gastroenterologist at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge. Appointed as a consultant in 2001 I was clinical director for gastroenterology 2004-2018 and am now director of the Cambridge University Hospital Biomedical Research Centre. I have a particular interest and expertise in diagnostic gastroenterology, including endoscopy and colonoscopy, and management of Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, coeliac disease and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Using the first class facilities at Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital, I provide the full range of endoscopic investigation and management of all conditions relating to the oesophagus, stomach and bowel.

I undertake all endoscopy myself, and by working closely with colleagues in radiology, pathology, surgery and dietetics, I ensure your appropriate investigation and treatment whatever the cause of your symptoms. With a caring and friendly manner in the clinic and outside, I undertake all private diagnostic endoscopy /
colonoscopy myself and have extensive experience of the full range of medical and dietary therapies for gastroenterological disease.

My clinical and research focus is on inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome - researching the genetic and environmental causes of Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and IBS and understanding how better to treat these conditions. I am actively involved as chair of the the British Society of Gastroenterology
IBD Clinical Research Group and chair of the UK IBD Genetics Consortium. I was appointed Professor of Translational Gastroenterology by the University of Cambridge in 2020.

I have been director and clinical lead for Gastroenterology at Addenbrooke's Hospital for the last 12 years and am actively involved as chair of the the BSG IBD Clinical Research Group and chair of the UK IBD Genetics Consortium.
