As a neurologist, I have extensive experience of common neurological problems such as headache, sensory disorders, weakness, migraine and fits / epilepsy. However, I specialise in diagnosis and treatment of Parkinson’s and movement disorders such as ataxia, dystonia, progressive supranuclear palsy, multiple systems atrophy. I have 20 years’ experience in the use of botulinum toxin (Botox) for the treatment of focal dystonia.
I trained in medicine at Cambridge and Oxford Universities qualifying in 1992. I trained in neurology in London including at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. My PhD was awarded after a period of three years as a MRC Clinical Training Fellow at the Institute of Neurology, London, for research into the genetics of Parkinson’s disease and cerebellar ataxias. I was appointed consultant neurologist in Norwich in 2004 where I led and developed the clinical services for Parkinson’s which were cited on the Parkinson's UK website as an example of best practice. I have been a consultant in neurology at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge since 2013.
My previous leadership roles have included the Parkinson’s Excellence Network eastern region and specialty lead for research in neurological disorders and Parkinson’s in the Clinical Research Network (Eastern), member of Council of the Association of British Neurologists with particular responsibility for development of UK neurology guidelines. I am a member of the UK Parkinson’s Clinical Studies Group to identify gaps in our knowledge and to help develop ideas and prioritise research into Parkinson’s and related conditions.
While in Norwich, I introduced a multidisciplinary team assessment and developed an integrated care pathway for Parkinson’s. I also led an important patient safety initiative to set up a Parkinson’s medicines management team to address the problem of missed medication doses in hospital. My Norwich team was runner up in the Hospital Doctor Parkinson's Team of the Year Award in 2006.
I teach and lecture regularly on various aspects of Parkinson’s disease, dystonia, ataxia and other movement disorders at national and international meetings including the Royal Institution of Great Britain and I am a faculty member of the Parkinson’s Academy. I have led and taken part in numerous UK multi-centre and international research studies. I was ‘champion’ for the Parkinson’s Best Practice Tariff which incentivises hospitals to provide good care in accordance with NICE guidelines.
I am a recognised expert and key opinion leader on advanced therapies for Parkinson’s. I have published extensively in this area and was one of the first neurologists in the UK to use Duodopa®.
