I received my undergraduate medical degree from the University of Wales College of Medicine in Cardiff with Honours (first class), where I also received funding from the Medical Research Council to complete an intercalated degree in Biochemistry. I subsequently undertook specialist training in Rheumatology in the Northwest of England. During my specialist training, I completed a master’s in science degree in Clinical Rheumatology in 2002 and was subsequently awarded a Clinical Research Training Fellowship from the Medical Research Council to complete a PhD investigating the genetics of psoriatic arthritis at The University of Manchester which I was awarded in 2007.
Since 2007 I have worked as a Consultant Rheumatologist at Manchester Royal Infirmary whilst also holding an honorary academic position at The University of Manchester. I see all general rheumatological conditions at the Kellgren Centre for Rheumatology which is also a Lupus Centre of Excellence. I am the musculoskeletal ultrasound lead for the Northwest of England and have a specialist interest in spondyloarthropathies with a dedicated specialist clinic for patients with ankylosing spondylitis and psoriatic arthritis.
In 2023 I was made an Honorary Professor within the Faculty of Biology, Medicine, and Health at The University of Manchester having been awarded a Manchester Academic Health Science Centre (MAHSC) Clinical Chair.
I am involved in both basic science research in psoriatic arthritis at The University of Manchester and am principal investigator for clinical research studies, both academic and commercial, observational and investigative medicines, Phase II and above, in particular those involving ultrasound and ultrasound guided synovial biopsy studies at the Kellgren Centre for Rheumatology in Manchester Royal Infirmary and the Manchester NIHR/Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility.

I work full time and have two very lively boys who keep me busy after work. I am currently having my second chance in life to learn the violin with my boys for pleasure. My work keeps me very busy so it is difficult to have a hobby at present, but I love good food.
