Dr Priyanka Mehta

Consultant Haematologist

MBBS, MD, FRCP, FRCPath

I have been a Consultant Haematologist for over 10 years with experience in benign, malignant and laboratory haematology. My expertise is in red cell disorders (anaemias) and malignancies like acute and chronic leukaemias, myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN).

I have extensive experience in laboratory haematology and providing interpretation and guidance on haematological lab investigations.

My research interest in myeloid disorders, leukaemias led me to open several national and international clinical trials for these conditions in Bristol allowing access to novel therapies to patients in the region. I am very research active and like to be able to offer my patients the benefit of up to date evidence in managing their condition. I thoroughly enjoy my role as a clinician and consider it a privilege to be able to care for patients, together with all the nursing and support staff.

I am currently the Principal Investigator for eight clinical trials in Bristol and Chief Investigator for a local research study and an international leukaemia trial.

I am currently the Clinical Lead for the department of Haematology at University Hospitals Bristol NHS Trust. I am the clinical lead on research projects relating to biosensors and chemotherapy in cancers at the University of the West of England. We have successfully completed projects on NIHR and commercial grants. I am a visiting research fellow at UWE. I am a panel member of the Medicines Advisory Group (MAG) for the Trust.

I am the lead for leukaemia service at UHBristol NHS trust. I have been the lead for Haemoglobinopathy service until 2016. I have been an Educational Supervisor for haematology trainees in the region since 2008. I'm a clinician who believes in keeping patient's choice and quality of life considerations at the centre of treatment decisions.

I am passionate about good food and enjoy cooking for family and friends. I like experimenting with different cuisines and my husband and two children are fairly appreciative (and tolerant) of my attempts! I like travelling, particularly to places of historical interests with varied culture and languages. In my spare time I like to read, listen to music, catch up with family... and I hope to get physical fitness higher up on my priority list sometime soon.
