I was appointed as a Consultant Gastroenterologist at Manchester Royal Infirmary in 2008 after completing my specialist medical training in 2006. Initially I completed a joint physiology/pharmacology degree with first class honours in 1993 and qualified in medicine with honours in 1996. I subsequently completed a PhD in gastrointestinal pharmacology in 2004 and in 2006 was awarded an international research fellowship in Perth, Western Australia. Here I was trained in complex inflammatory bowel disease management as well as advanced endoscopic procedures including endoscopic ultrasound, endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), HALO radiofrequency ablation and double balloon enteroscopy for which I provide a north west regional service.

I specialise in the management of patients with digestive disorders of the luminal gastrointestinal tract (oesophagus, stomach, small bowel and colon) including the diagnosis and management of heartburn (gastro oesophageal reflux disease), indigestion (dyspepsia), abdominal pain, diarrhoea and constipation and inflammatory bowel disease as well as the investigation and nutritional management of weight loss. I have specialist expertise in the endoscopic diagnosis and endoscopic therapy of heartburn and Barrett’s oesophagus and provide BRAVO wireless pH assessment for oesophageal reflux and endoscopic mucosal resection and HALO radiofrequency ablation therapy for Barrett’s (as a tertiary service for Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Cheshire).

I am also a nationally accredited expert bowel cancer screening colonoscopist and provide a weekly regional screening colonoscopy and advanced polypectomy / EMR service for patients across the conurbation. My caecal intubation rates are over 98% with a complication rate of <0.2% and my performance figures are externally audited annually. I am also a national expert in double balloon enteroscopy for the management of small bowel disorders and provide a regional service for patients needing endoscopic ultrasound and fine needle aspiration as well as being an endoscopy trainer for the regions junior doctors.

In addition, given my BSc and PhD background I have a specialist interest in the pharmacological management of all gastrointestinal disorders including both simple and complex inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, gastro-oesophageal reflux and constipation.

I have published original research widely and continue to do so and am a national speaker on gastrointestinal disorders. I am a board member of the upper gastrointestinal committee for Manchester Cancer and an Editorial Board member of Crohns and Colitis UK.

I also have ongoing clinical research studies in Barrett’s oesophagus and inflammatory bowel disease and hold an honorary senior lecturer position at the University of Manchester as well as being a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, London.
