Specialises in
I was appointed as a consultant interventional cardiologist in 2003, and I have over 16 years experience. A substantial amount of my workload is treating heart attack and angina patients with angioplasty and closing PFOs for young people who have suffered a stroke. Other structural work includes left atrial appendage closure and MitraClip. I undertake approximately 220 angioplasties each year in my NHS practice, and my outcomes are excellent, having outperformed the national predicted risk model very year. We were one of ten centres offering let atrial appendage occlusion, one of twenty centres for PFO and one of just 4 centres offering routine mitraclip therapy. I have worked in a major regional cardiac centre in Stoke-on-Trent, where the catchment for tertiary cardiology is nearly 2 million people across Staffordshire, Shropshire and Cheshire.
I graduated from Manchester Medical School, and trained as a cardiologist in Liverpool, Dundee, Leicester and Auckland, New Zealand. Finally, I returned to Stoke as a consultant cardiologist. My doctoral thesis was in areas of vascular biology, under Prof Struthers in the University of Dundee.
I have been involved in a number of national committees for British Cardiac Society and the Royal College of Physicians. I am also actively involved in research and the teaching of medical students. I'm the Clinical Lead for Cardiac Rehabilitation in Stoke.
I'm the Clinical Lead for Catheter Laboratory and Clinical Lead for Cardiac Rehabilitation.
