Specialises in
I graduated from the University of Manchester in 1999, and after postgraduate training in Lancashire, I became a member of the Royal College of Physicians of London in 2002, following which I started my specialist training in cardiology in Yorkshire. This comprehensive five-year programme led to training in all aspects of cardiology.
I was appointed as a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist at East Lancashire NHS Trust in 2010. I perform approximately 600 angiogram/angioplasty procedures per year, and my annual inpatient and outpatient workload is well in excess of 1,000 patients, covering all aspects of cardiology. This includes management of coronary heart disease, valvular heart disease, arrhythmias, hypertension, hyperlipidaemia, cardiomyopathies and heart failure.
Between 2008 and 2010 I worked with Professor Patrick Serruys at the Thoraxcentre, Rotterdam, Netherlands undertaking research in new coronary stents and in the risk stratification of patients treated by coronary angioplasty. My PhD thesis - titled 'Risk Stratification in Patients Undergoing Percutaneous Coronary Revascularisation - was awarded Cum Laude by the Erasmus University, Rotterdam in 2011. Â
In 2010 I became the Interventional Fellow at the University Hospitals of North Staffordshire, allowing intensive experience in all aspects of percutaneous coronary intervention. I perform virtually all of my diagnostic and interventional cases trans-radially.
I have served on several national committees including the British Cardiovascular Intervention Society research committee (2013-2017) and the National NICOR Percutaneous Coronary Intervention audit steering committee (2016-2021). I was also the Greater Manchester National Institute for Health Research Cardiovascular Specialty Co-lead between 2015 and 2022. I currently act as a reviewer for the Royal College of Physicians invited service review team.
I remain active in the field of interventional cardiology research and have published over 175 papers in peer reviewed journals, 9 book chapters, together with giving numerous presentations at national and international meetings. I remain a peer reviewer for several cardiology journals, work on clinical trial event adjudication and am an Honorary Professor of Cardiology at the University of Central Lancashire, Preston.
