I have been a Consultant Gastroenterologist for 14 years. I have extensive experience in the investigation and management of gastrointestinal disorders. My specific expertise is in the management of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). I underwent extensive clinical and research training in IBD including a dedicated fellowship at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard University, Boston for a year.
I was appointed as a Consultant Gastroenterologist at the Royal Liverpool Hospital in October 2009 and moved to Addenbrookes in 2021. My main interests include IBD, colonoscopy and clinical research in IBD. I have published peer reviewed articles in leading gastroenterology journals and authored several book chapters.
I specialise in the investigation and management of the inflammatory bowel diseases, ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. I am an accredited bowel cancer screening colonoscopy provider. I manage a wide variety of gastrointestinal conditions such as abdominal pain, dyspepsia, coeliac disease and irritable bowel syndrome.
I have performed over 5,000 gastroscopies, colonoscopies and flexible sigmoidoscopies and I am an accredited bowel cancer screening endoscopist. I have extensive experience in removing polyps from the colon.
I am a member of the national inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) clinical committee of the British Society of Gastroenterology. I previously served as a member of the IBD national research committee. In addition, I was a lead for gastroenterology research for the North West Coast Clinical Research Network for seven years.

During my research fellowship, I investigated the role of bacteria in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and colon cancer. I still maintain an active interest in gut bacterial research. I continue to do active clinical research in IBD - I have published several peer reviewed articles in leading gastroenterology journals in the field of IBD.
My current research interests centre around personalised medicine. I hold two grants from Crohn's and Colitis UK. I am also a co-investigator for a large randomised trial of infliximab in acute pancreatitis. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I investigated the role of vitamin D in COVID-19.
I am an associate editor for Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics.
