Miss Gopalan Vijaya

Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist

MBBS, MRCOG, MD(Res)

"I like working at Spire because it has all the facilities and services that I can offer to my urogynae patients under one roof."

I have been a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Frimley Park Hospital for nearly seven years. I am a Subspecialist in Urogynaecology and experienced in managing complex urogynaecology problems.

I completed my subspecialist training in urogynaecology at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and also obtained my MD(Res) in urogynaecology in 2014. I also had the excellent opportunity to do a clinical research fellow post in urogynaecology for two and a half years at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and have completed more than 10 research projects. My involvement in research has resulted in various national and international oral presentations and publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Working in a tertiary referral unit during my training has given me the necessary aptitude and expertise in managing patients with complex urogynaecology problems and offer a specialist service in managing patients after failed continence and prolapse treatments.

I specialise in managing uterovaginal prolapse, overactive bladder, stress urinary incontinence, bladder pain syndrome, recurrent urinary tract infections and postpartum pelvic floor dysfunction.

I have expertise in performing less invasive urogynae procedures such as Percutaneous Tibial Nerve Stimulation (PTNS), flexible cystoscopy and Botox® injections, urethral Bulkamid injections to more invasive options such as Burch colposuspension to treat urinary incontinence. I also have the expertise in performing primary and repeat vaginal prolapse surgery, sacrocolpopexy, sacrospinous fixation and colpocleisis etc.

To date I would have performed 3,000 urodynamic investigations, about 1,100 continence procedures which include Botox® injections into the bladder, Burch colposuspension, urethral Bulkamid injections, 1,500 uterine prolapse and vaginal repair procedures and 5,000 cystoscopy procedures over a 10 year period in both my NHS and private practice.

I am the Clinical Lead for Gynae Clinical Governance at Frimley Park Hospital. I am also an Educational Supervisor for Obstetrics and Gynaecology trainees.
