I have been a consultant oncoplastic breast surgeon for the last eight years and specialise in all aspects of benign and malignant breast disease. I work in a breast unit that operates on approximately 450 cancers per year. My workload originates from both symptomatic clinics and the screening programme.
We offer at Spire a female led ‘one-stop’ breast clinic for women and men, providing clinical breast assessment, mammography, ultrasound and biopsies (if needed), all at the same clinic appointment. The results of the mammograms and ultrasound will be available during the appointment and discussed in detail by myself. If a biopsy is required, this will be reported by an experienced consultant breast pathologist and the results available within seven days.
All patients having a biopsy and/or surgery are discussed at a dedicated multidisciplinary team (MDT) meeting where surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, oncologists and breast care nurses with a specific interest in breast disease are all in attendance.
We understand the anxiety that a change in the breast can cause to both women and men and strive to offer a friendly and compassionate environment to try and help our patients at a very stressful time.
I qualified with honours in Rome and moved to the UK in 2003 to fulfil my dream of becoming a breast surgeon. In 2011 I was awarded the ASGBI (Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland) Gold Medal for the best performance in the FRCS (Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons) examination.
In 2012 I received the Gwillym Griffith Travelling Fellowship which allowed me to undertake a fellowship in breast and reconstructive surgery in Brisbane, Australia. Soon after returning to the UK, I undertook a fellowship in Oncoplastic Breast Surgery at the University Hospital of Sheffield, obtaining one of only nine national places awarded every year from this extremely competitive scheme.
I am an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and regularly teach as an Associate Clinical Tutor for Cardiff University.
