OBE, MBA, FRCS(Gen Surg)
I trained in general surgery, hepatobiliary surgery, emergency surgery, trauma and critical care in the UK, USA, Australia and South Africa and joined Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) NHS Trust as a consultant hepatobiliary surgeon in 2005. My specialist interests are gallbladder, liver and pancreas surgery, surgical management of hepatobiliary biliary disease and major trauma. Fellowships in South Africa, Australia and America have given me significant international healthcare knowledge and a depth of surgical experience.
I have extensive surgical education experience. I developed the specialist skills course in emergency surgery and trauma for surgical trainees held at the Royal College of Surgeons of England and have taught trauma surgical skills around the world including the USA, Australia, Norway and New Zealand.
I have published extensively having edited 10 textbooks including Ryan’s Ballistic Trauma (Springer Verlag) and Emergency Surgery (Blackwell) and written more than 100 chapters and peer reviewed academic papers.
I have significant experience in clinical leadership and healthcare management and gained an MBA from the University of Nottingham in 2014. I have worked in leadership roles in acute trust, primary care trust and strategic health authority level. I have also held a number of senior leadership roles in the NHS including Chair of NHS England’s Major Trauma Clinical Reference Group, Clinical Director for Anaesthesia, Theatres and Critical Care at NUH and Director of Surgery at NUH. I am currently the Director of the East Midlands Major Trauma Centre.
