Mr Ahmad Khalil

Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon

MBBS, BSc, MRCOphth, FRCS

"I love working at Spire Fylde Coast Hospital because the staff are excellent, the working environment is good and supportive and the theatre facilities are outstanding."

I am a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon and have a sub-specialty interest in medical retina. I am an expert in AMD (Age-related macular degeneration) and treat WET macular degeneration with anti-VEGF intravitreal injections or photodynamic therapy (PDT) in the cases in which anti-VEGF injections are contraindicated, like stroke or heart attack.

I am also a cataract surgeon and have excellent outcomes of cataract surgery in my patients. I also do cataract surgery in WET AMD and dry AMD patients and intend to implant special IOL AMD lenses. I also perform YAG laser capsulotomy for hazy capsules after cataract surgery. I perform lid operations including blepharoplasty, entropion, ectropion correction, and excision of lid lesion. I treat acute and chronic glaucoma, watery eyes and general ophthalmological diseases.

I also treat diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular oedema (DMO) with anti-VEGF intravitreal injections and laser photocoagulation. Retinal vascular conditions are blinding conditions and I treat associated macular oedema with anti-VEGF intravitreal injections and Dexamethasone (Ozurdex) implant. Uveitis is a common inflammatory ophthalmic condition and I treat these conditions promptly with anti-inflammatory therapy and in close liaison with a rheumatologist.

I also treat symptomatic middle-aged patients who suffer from central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR). I perform full investigations for medical retina cases including OCT scan, fluorescein angiography (FFA), indocyanine angiography (ICG), electrodiagnostic tests.

In my NHS and private practice I have performed: 5,000-6,000 cataract operations and over 8,000 intravitreal injections for wet macular degeneration, DMO and retinal vein occlusions and several thousands of lid procedures.

In addition to my clinical positions, I am an examiner for Fellowship (FRCOphth and Refraction Certificate exams). I am also honorary lecturer at the University of Liverpool.

I wanted to be an eye surgeon as a child when my father suddenly lost his sight and that gives me tremendous empathy for every patient that I see.

I have worked in Scotland, North Wales and England and achieved a FRCS degree from the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland and therefore have flexibility, adaptability and ability to mix well with all nationalities.

I like learning other languages and speak English, Urdu and Punjabi fluently.

I like to watch tennis, hockey, cricket and boxing and personally like long walks, cycling and playing chess. I relax by listening to western and Indian music and watching movies with my family.
