Mr Alagappan Sivaraman

I am a full-time private consultant orthopaedic spinal surgeon. I offer private spinal surgery and various spinal injection treatments for back and neck pain. I specialise in spinal surgery for deformity, inflammatory spinal pathologies (rheumatoid spine), degenerative conditions of the neck and lower back, spinal tumours and infections eg spinal tuberculosis.

Minimally invasive (keyhole) spinal surgery is a fast-developing field with many benefits for patients. Examples are the X-Stop and Wellex implants for lower back pain and balloon kyphoplasty to help patients with spinal fractures due to osteoporosis and spinal tumours. I carry out both of these procedures at Spire Hartswood Hospital. Other newer techniques that I offer include interspinous decompression for degenerative conditions of the lumbar spine with spinal stenosis, and cervical disc arthroplasty (neck disk replacement) for degenerative spine disorders.

I completed my higher surgical training in trauma and orthopaedics at Bart's and The Royal London Hospitals. I worked as a consultant orthopaedic and spinal surgeon at Barts and The Royal London from 2006 until late 2011.

During my training I worked as a visiting spinal fellow in Germany, the United States and India. I completed my spinal training at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore, Middlesex. I was actively involved in setting up the Spinal Tuberculosis Unit at The Royal London Hospital, one of very few units in the UK.

I am the author of a spinal chapter in a medical text book, and have published and presented papers on spinal surgery at international conferences.
