Mr Anand Tamhankar

Consultant General Surgeon

MBBS, MS, FRCS (Ed), FRCSEd (General Surgery)

I work as a Consultant General and Upper GI Surgeon at the Northern General Hospital, where I perform complex major oesophago-gastric cancer surgery. My private practice is based at Spire Claremont Hospital.

At Spire Claremont Hospital, I offer assessment and investigations for abdominal pain, upper GI endoscopy, laparoscopic cholecystectomy, laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery (fundoplication), hernia surgery, lumps and bumps surgery, and minor and major emergency surgery.

I have a wide ranging experience from my training in three different continents. Having completed my medical degree and basic surgical training in Mumbai, India, I acquired higher training in my specialty in Sheffield.

Besides this, I spent two years as a Foregut Fellow with Professor Tom DeMeester at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, working on reflux disease and Barrett’s oesophagus. I was also a visiting fellow with Professor Takeshi Sano at the Cancer Institute Hospital, Tokyo, where I learnt the Japanese philosophy of radical oesophago-gastric cancer surgery.

After concluding my specialist training in Sheffield, I completed a Laparoscopic Oesophagogastric Fellowship in Guildford, Surrey and was then appointed as a Consultant Surgeon at the Northern General Hospital. I am affiliated with the University of Sheffield as an Honorary Senior Lecturer.
