I was appointed as a substantive Consultant Spinal Surgeon at The Salford Royal Foundation Trust and The Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital in 2013. My specialist orthopaedic training was in the Sheffield (North Trent) Orthopaedic rotation. Subsequently, I did two fellowships in spinal surgery. The first was based at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals and the second year was at Leeds Teaching Hospitals as the National Spinal Fellow. This prestigious fellowship gave me combined neurosurgical and orthopaedic spinal experience and helped me develop my skills further.

I had major spinal surgery five years ago and had a successful functional outcome after a long rigorous rehabilitation programme. This personal event has made me empathise more with my patients. I’m able to provide tailored advice and support to all my patients due to this unique insight into the do's and don’ts after spinal surgery.

I have a comprehensive spinal surgical practice. My work at The Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital (RMCH) involves dealing with complex paediatric problems including deformity. RMCH is one of the two index referral centres for neurofibromatosis. I’m also the National Paediatric Spinal Surgical Lead for neurofibromatosis. My adult practice at Salford Royal Foundation Trust includes complex and varied pathology (deformity, infection, tumour and degenerative conditions) in all areas of the spine (cervical, thoracic and lumbar). I have a specialist interest in complex cervical pathology.

I’m a member of the AO Spine Society where I’m also on their faculty for education. I’m a member of the British Association of Spinal Surgeons, Association of Spine Surgeons of India and the British Scoliosis Society. I’m regularly invited to teach as faculty on both national and international courses.

In my role as Clinical Governance Lead for complex spinal surgery at Salford Royal Foundation Trust, I have successfully established a quarterly regional meeting of all hospitals to discuss the morbidity and mortality in order to find solutions to help improve surgical outcomes and minimise risk.

I’m very keen on continuous quality improvement in spinal surgery to ensure the best patient outcomes. I enter all patient data onto the British Spine Registry and Spine Tango to assess patient outcomes. This gives me a valuable self-audit tool to constantly improve my practice. In the last year, I’ve operated on 253 patients. As per the Spine Tango data, a significant percentage of my patients felt they had been helped by the surgery and a majority were very satisfied with the overall care.
