I have a specialist interest in joint replacement surgery. I perform a large number of hip and knee replacements per year, using various fixation methods and different bearing surfaces, depending on my patients’ activity requirements. I use minimally invasive techniques in my surgery and work with my anaesthetic colleagues to facilitate an enhanced rapid recovery protocol for my patients.

My experience and practice has led to my specialist tertiary referral practice for hip and complex hip replacement surgery. I perform high numbers of hip revision procedures and have wide experience in the variety of reconstructive options required for this surgery. In addition, I have a hip resurfacing practice. My clinical activities and outcomes are available for review in the UK National Joint Registry.

Having been a medical student in London, I trained in orthopaedics at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore, completing my training as the Lecturer in the Academic Department of Orthopaedics at University College, London. Towards the end of my training I worked for a year at Harvard University at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. My work in the USA was centred around primary and revision arthroplasty. It was in America that I developed a specific interest in hip arthroplasty and hip revision surgery.

In 1999, I was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the University Hospital, Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham with a specialist interest in hip and knee surgery. I have continued to work to progress my skills and develop my practice during my 19 years as a Consultant.

I am invited to lecture, to discuss and to demonstrate my activities in hip surgery nationally and internationally. I run a number of specialist post graduate hip courses in and away from Nottingham. The Nottingham Hip Revision Course has become a particularly popular event, attracting surgeons from all around the world. I have published on numerous topics surrounding primary, resurfacing and revision hip arthroplasty.

I have been an executive of the British Hip Society (BHS) since 2013, and was elected Vice president in 2016 and will become President of the BHS in 2018.

I am the present President of the British Hip Society, having been on the BHS executive for a number of years. That position has allowed me to contribute to the political discussions that surround joint replacement and hip surgery in the UK. I was invited to become one of only 90 surgeon members world-wide of the International Hip Society in 2018.

I am active in hip research and involved in implant development in both primary and revision hip surgery. Having been part of a world-wide development team, I performed the first implantation of a now established socket system in Nottingham in 2009.
