Virtual consultations:
I graduated at the Medical College of St Bartholomew's Hospital in London in 1994 and was awarded the Matthews Duncan Prize in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. I trained in obstetrics and gynaecology mainly in north and east London and also spent some time in New Zealand.
I have been a consultant since 2006 and have a particular interest in the modern treatment and management options for heavy, irregular and painful periods. I am trained in gynaecological ultrasound and therefore for patient convenience, I am able to offer a service that includes discussion, examination, ultrasound and treatment in the same visit.
If a surgical solution is necessary, I am trained in the full range of general gynaecological procedures, including keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery. I am keen to promote the use of newer procedures such as endometrial ablation for heavy periods as an alternative to hysterectomy.
Some of these newer procedures can be carried out under local anaesthetic if a patient wishes not to undergo a general anaesthetic. Spire Murrayfield Hospital has a fully equipped colposcopy room, so I am able to offer management and treatment for women with abnormal smears.
Some of the principal treatments carried out by Mr Ash Alam at Spire include:
