Mr Devi Prakash Tokala

Consultant Spine Surgeon

MBBS, MRCS, FRCS (T&O)

I am a Consultant Orthopaedic Spine Surgeon with a special interest in degenerative spinal conditions. With a focus on advanced minimally invasive spinal surgery techniques, I provide evidence based, innovative and effective treatments for a range of spinal pathologies, including lumbar and cervical disc prolapse, stenosis, sciatica, radiculopathy, myelopathy, and more.

I specialise in minimally invasive procedures for both complex and routine spinal conditions that include:

  • Discectomy and decompression: Removing herniated discs and thickened ligaments to relieve pressure on nerves and alleviate pain
  • Disc replacement and spinal fusion: Treatments for degenerative disc disease and spinal instability, using both instrumented and non-instrumented techniques
  • Spinal injections: Targeted treatments for pain relief and inflammation reduction: caudal epidural, nerve root block, medial branch block injections
  • Spinal revision surgery: Addressing complications from previous spinal surgeries
  • Treatment of degenerative spine disorders: Managing conditions that cause lower back pain with leg pain (sciatica), neck and arm pain (radiculopathy), and chronic pain
  • Trauma and sports injuries: Surgical interventions for spinal injuries resulting from trauma, including fractures and ligament damage
  • Sacroiliac joint pain and coccygeal pain: Addressing pain originating from the pelvis and tailbone
  • Cauda equina syndrome: Timely interventions to prevent permanent neurological damage
  • Osteoporosis: Managing spinal conditions related to bone density loss

My approach prioritises the use of minimal access surgery, meaning less invasive procedures with faster recovery times, less scarring, and lower risks for patients. This focus on minimally invasive techniques allows for effective treatment while ensuring a quicker return to daily activities.

I received training at some of the UK’s most renowned spinal units, working alongside both leading neurosurgeons and orthopaedic spine surgeons to gain a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to spinal care. I completed a year-long spinal research fellowship at the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham. During my specialist registrar training, I worked in prestigious spinal units, including Southampton General Hospital, Bristol Frenchay and Southmead hospitals, and Taunton General Hospital.

After passing my fellowship exam, I undertook a two-year internationally recognised Senior Celtic Spine Fellowship at Cardiff University Hospital and Exeter Royal Devon Hospital. I also completed a six-month placement at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, gaining additional expertise in paediatric spinal surgery.

My NHS post is at Stepping Hill Hospital, Stockport. Although I have been fully trained in Trauma and Orthopaedics, I now work purely as a Spinal Surgeon. I have keen interest in clinical research and have presented in national and international meetings. I have many publications in international peer reviewed journals. I am also committed to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and have been a faculty on FRCS Spine revision courses.

I offer personalised care tailored to each patient's spine pathology and their needs, designed for optimal recovery. My commitment to using the latest minimally invasive techniques ensures that patients benefit from quicker recovery times, reduced complications, and long-lasting outcomes.
