Mr Doug Hay was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon working within the Neurosurgical Department at Addenbrooke’s University Hospital in August 2012. He was first appointed as a Spinal Consultant at the Ipswich hospital NHS trust in 2008. His practice covers the whole spectrum of spinal disorders, including degenerative conditions of neck and lumbar spine, tumour, infection, trauma and scoliosis in children as well as adults.
Before his appointment as a Consultant, Mr Hay undertook two prestigious fellowships in Spinal Surgery. In 2006 he spent a year in Brisbane, Australia on the AO Spinal Fellowship. In 2007 after returning to the UK, Mr Hay spent six months at the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham (one of the main spinal teaching institutions in the UK). He was granted the "British Orthopaedic Association" award as the top candidate at the interview.
First qualifying from St Bartholomew’s Medical School in London in 1994, Mr Hay was appointed to the East Anglian Higher Surgical Training Rotation in Trauma and Orthopaedics in 2001. Though his practise is purely spinal now, his broad orthopaedic training allows him to give an informed diagnosis and management plan.
Mr Hay has presented both nationally and internationally on many aspects of spinal surgery.
