MBCHB FRCS ( Trauma and Orth)
"I enjoy working in a hospital that has expressed a keen desire to support the treatment of children."
I am able to see patients for all aspects of Paediatric Orthopaedics and Trauma. I perform procedures including osteotomies (altering the position of the bone), for conditions such as shallow hip and hip arthroscopy, which is useful for the treatment of non-arthritic hip conditions such as impingement and sports injuries.
I have a sub specialist interest in the management of hip dysplasia (clicky hip, dislocated hip), Perthes disease and slipped upper femoral epiphysis (SUFE). I take referrals from across the UK in these conditions.
Many adult hip problems are the sequelae of these paediatric conditions and I have a clinic specifically for young adults with hip pain. The aim of this is to perform joint preserving surgery in the hope of avoiding joint replacement at a later stage.
I qualified from Birmingham University in 1990 and subsequently spent three years in junior surgical training in Nottingham before returning to the West Midlands' orthopaedic training scheme. During this time I became very interested in children’s orthopaedics and after completing my training I went on a fellowship to Melbourne Children’s Hospital. This is the largest children's hospital in the Southern Hemisphere and its orthopaedic fellowship is one of the most prestigious and sought after.
I am the lead clinician for paediatric hip disease at Birmingham Children's Hospital. On returning to the UK in 2003 I was appointed as a Consultant to Birmingham Children’s Hospital and The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital. In addition I run outreach clinics at Russell’s Hall Hospital, Dudley.
I am regularly involved with teaching and I have been a faculty member and invited speaker on many national and international courses and conferences.
Some of the procedures that I perform are relatively new and I am involved heavily in research in these areas. I have more than 25 publications in peer reviewed journals and have written book chapters and edited a text book.
