I am a consultant hand, wrist and elbow surgeon specialising in the treatment of upper limb conditions. I am based at the Birmingham Hand Centre, the largest specialist hand centre in Europe serving a population of over five million, and regularly help patients with complex degenerative and traumatic conditions of the arm.
I am one of the few surgeons in the UK that perform a high volume of keyhole (endoscopic) carpal tunnel surgery, which results in less pain, quicker return to work, and significantly reduced scarring. I am also an expert in joint replacements for thumb arthritis, as well as a designer of custom-made 3D printed implants for wrist and forearm deformity correction. Other specialist procedures I offer include the latest wide-awake techniques for Dupuytren’s disease, PRP solutions for tennis/golfer’s elbow, ganglion cyst removal, trigger finger release, and keyhole surgery for the wrist. My sub-specialisation in the upper limb allows me to build a focussed practice that can optimise the outcomes for my patients. As a guitarist and cellist, my musical background gives me a unique appreciation of the demands of both amateur and professional musicians.
I graduated from Cambridge University with honours, and am a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons. In addition to a comprehensive orthopaedic education, I received advanced hand and wrist specialisation through the prestigious National Interface Fellowship, where I gained plastic surgery and peripheral nerve expertise. I was a fellow of the Wrightington Upper Limb Unit, working alongside world renowned experts in challenging and complex conditions. After finishing specialist training, I was awarded the highly regarded British Orthopaedic Association reconstruction fellowship to further hone my skills in centres of excellence in Europe and Asia.
I am keen to advance medical research, and have published over 40 scientific papers in internationally recognised medical textbooks and journals. I am a chief investigator for a NHS approved randomised multi-centre trial, investigating the optimum method of treating hand fractures in soldiers and civilians. I am an editorial board member of the Journal of Hand Surgery and am regularly invited to teach in international conferences.
Some of the principal treatments carried out by Mr Feiran Wu at Spire include:

I firmly believe a healthy work-life balance improves an individual's wellbeing. I am a table tennis player, rock climber and enjoy playing the cello and guitar. These activities have also enabled me to gain a deeper understanding of the technical demands of keen sporting enthusiasts and musicians.
I also speak Chinese Mandarin.
