I have been a consultant ophthalmologist for 24 years, after undertaking most of my ophthalmic training at the Birmingham and Midland Eye Hospital. I am happy to see patients with the whole range of general ophthalmology problems but have a particular interest in cataract surgery and strabismus (squints).
I undertake more than 750 cataract operations per year, the vast majority (99%) under topical (non-injection anaesthetic). Indeed that has been my practice for 20 years.
I also undertake YAG laser capsulotomy for posterior capsular opacification post cataract surgery.
I have been clinical director and head of the ophthalmology department at Blackpool Victoria Hospital for 10 years - and helped develop the cataract service - overseen the introduction of the macular service and expanded the paediatric ophthalmology service.
Some of the principal treatments carried out by Mr Gerald Naylor at Spire include:
MB ChB / Leeds University / 1981
Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery
Degree given at the end of 5 years undergraduate training, qualifying as a doctor
European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS)
North of England Ophthalmological Society
The Midland Ophthalmological Society
Head of Ophthalmic Department (Clinical Director) at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHSFT
Past Chair Medical Advisory Committee at Spire Fylde Coast Hospital
Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon, Blackpool Victoria Hospital
As a 'sand grown'un' I was delighted to have the opportunity to return to Blackpool following my training and am honoured to be able to serve my home town, both as a doctor and through membership of Rotary International.
I enjoy travelling and now that our three children have flown the nest, I hope to spend more time out on the Cumbrian Fells. I enjoy watching football although despite being a Blackpool FC season ticket holder for more than 20 years, my Saturday afternoons are currently a football free zone.
