I have been a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon for 21 years with a subspecialty interest in the treatment of upper limb disorders. I have considerable experience therefore in the treatment for surgical disorders of the shoulder, elbow and wrist. I have particular experience in the field of treatment of wrist fractures and chronic wrist disorders.

I probably perform the greatest number of wrist replacements surgeries of any surgeon in the UK and now have an international reputation in the field of wrist replacements. I have undertaken the worlds first specific design and wrist hemi-arthroplasty and undertaken the worlds first series of 20 of these operations and more recently undertaken the worlds first modular wrist hemi-arthroplasty surgery. I have subspecialty interest in upper limb surgery and therefore deal with disorders of the shoulder, the elbow and the hand and wrist. I have particular expertise in the field of joint replacement of the upper limb; including shoulder replacement, elbow replacement, wrist replacement, replacement of the distal radioulnar joint, prosthetic replacement of the thumb and replacement of the finger.

I have been in both the NHS and private practice for 21 years and therefore have extensive experience in the field of upper limb surgery. For example, I now perform approximately 70 wrist replacements per year both partial and total. Approximately 15 replacements of the distal radioulnar joint and approximately 100 thumb replacements.

I have been involved in medical management for the whole of my career having initially been clinical director for Orthopaedics, then a Business Unit Director for MSK services at Southend University Hospital which involves managerially responsible for Orthopaedics, Chronic Pain, Rheumatology and the whole of Rehabilitation. I am now Clinical Director for MSK which encompasses the same remit.

I have Consulting agreements with Biomet, SWEEMAC, Extremity Medical and Acumed. I am therefore involved in teaching and training for these companies, together with product development each year. I have surgeons who visit me to gain practical experience in the field of upper limb surgery, particularly wrist replacement surgery. I am also invited to go to international conferences to lecture and to also travel internationally to assist surgeons who are starting to undertake wrist replacements.

I have a Medico Legal practice which includes personal injury, medical negligence and also undertaken work for the Health Service Ombudsmen.

I welcome appropriate patients wishing to refer and pay for treatment themselves without the need for a GP letter of referral.

Below is feedback from some of my patients at Spire Wellesley Hospital:

'Mr Packer has treated me on numerous occasions and I always find his approach friendly, caring, informative and personalised. He always puts me at ease and takes my pain seriously. He always recommends the best course of actions but with options (if appropriate) and he will do everything in the fastest time frame he can. He explains everything that he sees, and he is clear about what exactly he will be doing and as a patient you understand fully what to expect. I can't rate him highly enough'

November 2021: 'Very clear about all information and very much to the point; something that I appreciated. Procedure was carried out carefully and did not waste any time. Kept me well informed and ensured that I was comfortable all of the time I was in theatre. Would highly recommend him to anyone'.
