Mr Hasan Ahmed

I have undertaken advanced Fellowship training in shoulder and upper limb surgery in London. I have also trained in upper limb surgery in Southampton and Portsmouth. I have extensive experience in arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder. Since my appointment as a consultant in 2005, I have pioneered advanced shoulder and elbow arthroscopy techniques at Whipps Cross University Hospital. At Spire London East and Spire Hartswood Hospitals, I treat patients with shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand problems.

Due to my expertise, I am referred complex sports injuries and other injuries of the upper limb such as shoulder dislocations and fractures by my orthopaedic colleagues. I treat many of these using the latest methods of minimal invasive fixation (keyhole surgery), greatly reducing operative trauma and enhancing recovery. In 2012, I was selected as one of a handful of leading UK orthopaedic and sports surgeons, by the organising committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG), to provide specialist surgical care to elite Olympic and Paralympic athletes participating in the London 2012 Olympiad.

Shoulder: I treat most conditions by the latest arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery and minimally invasive surgery techniques using state of the art equipment. This includes frozen shoulder, dislocating shoulders, sports injuries, rotator cuff tears, arthritis and AC joint problems. Keyhole surgery greatly reduces postoperative pain, scarring and recovery time. I perform shoulder joint replacement surgery including the latest shoulder replacements such as the Reverse Polarity shoulder replacement and shoulder resurfacing.

Elbow: I perform arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery of the elbow for treatment of arthritis, loose bodies, loss of elbow movement and tennis elbow. I also perform open surgery for tennis and golfer’s elbow. I perform ulnar nerve decompression at the elbow. I treat sports injuries such as biceps tendon ruptures. I perform Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections for tennis and golfer's elbow.

Wrist: I perform surgery for ganglion cysts, wrist denervations, percutaneous and open fixation of scaphoid bone fractures and fixation of other complex wrist fractures.

Hand: I perform carpal tunnel decompressions, trigger finger releases, surgery for De Quervain's tenosynovitis, surgery for thumb arthritis and surgery for Dupuytren’s contracture. I treat Dupuytren’s contracture both by standard surgical techniques and also by the latest technique of needle release. This is done in selected patients and can be performed in the out-patient clinic under local anaesthetic. It is also known as Needle Aponeurotomy (NA) and Percutaneous Needle Fasciotomy (PNF). I have also been trained in the use of Collagenase which is an enzyme that can dissolve abnormal Dupuytren’s contracture tissue.

I have written many peer-reviewed publications. My Master’s thesis investigated the management of complex elbow fractures by minimal invasive fixation. I lecture nationally on shoulder and elbow surgery and teach courses for the FRCS (Tr & Orth) degree.
