Mr Ian Grant

Consultant Plastic Surgeon

MA BM BCH DM FRCS FRCS (Plast) Europ. Dip. Hand Surgery

"I enjoy working at Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital, being part of a team that delivers a very high standard of care, achieving excellent results. The staff are consistently kind and committed to the wellbeing of each patient and their loved ones."

I was appointed as a consultant at Addenbrooke’s Hospital Cambridge in 2005. I treat patients needing reconstructive surgery for major trauma, skin cancer (as part of the MDT) and hand / upper limb injury.

I undertook additional specialist training in hand surgery and microsurgery and treat peripheral nerve problems, osteoarthritis, Dupuytren’s disease, and children’s hands. I was awarded the European Diploma in Hand Surgery.

My private practice includes cosmetic surgery (specifically breast reduction, breast augmentation, abdominoplasty, and prominent ear correction). I am listed by the Royal College of Surgeons of England as a “Certified Cosmetic Surgeon”.

I am a full member of the British Association of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS), the British Association of Aesthetic Surgeons (BAAPS), and the British Society for Surgery of the Hand (BSSH).

I graduated from Oxford University in 1991. I then carried out two years of laboratory research on wound healing and scarring for which I was awarded a “Doctorate” from Oxford University. I trained as a plastic surgeon at hospitals in Salisbury, East Grinstead, London (Mount Vernon), Cambridge, Leeds, and Melbourne Australia. I undertook advanced training fellowships that included hand, micro’, peripheral nerve, and aesthetic surgery.

I teach plastic surgery trainees, hand surgery fellows and medical students. I have previously been the director of the department of plastic surgery at Addenbrooke’s Hospital and have been the Addenbrooke’s ‘training programme director’ responsible for the FY1 doctors. I have an honorary academic position with the University of Cambridge. I was the founder and director of a two-day annual course in lower limb reconstruction and another in hand surgery. I publish scientific articles, lecture, write book chapters (I am co-author of a book on plastic surgery) and am on the editorial committee of the European Journal of Hand Surgery.

In addition to offering patients a general anaesthetic or a ‘regional block’ I can carry out most hand surgery procedures using local anaesthetic with patients ‘awake’ (which allows a quicker recovery and shorter hospital stay).

I start most consultations with the question “tell me what has brought you here and tell me what’s important to you?”. I am interested in the common themes and patients individual priorities. I aim to bring the same level of personal attention and expertise to the care of all the patients that I am fortunate enough to treat.
