Mr Ian Mitchell

Consultant General Surgeon

MBBS, FRCS, MS

I qualified with MBBS from the Royal London Hospital in 1980, gained my FRCS (Eng) in 1986 and a MS on the possible pathogenesis of Crohn’s disease (an inflammatory bowel condition) in 1992. For this work I was a Hunterian Professor at the Royal College of Surgeons in 1992. I was appointed as a consultant in General and Gastrointestinal Surgery at Barnet General Hospital in 1994.

Subsequently I developed a number of services within the trust and in particular the management of colorectal and gastric cancer, using advanced endoscopic (including stenting), open and laparoscopic techniques. I have also been involved in basic and clinical research in these areas. Between 2005 and 2009 I was an upper gastrointestinal surgeon to University College Hospital. I have also worked closely with my orthopaedic colleagues at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital for a number of years as abdominal surgeon to the specialised Sarcoma service.

I have also developed an interest in the management of common perianal pathologies including haemorrhoids (piles) fissure and fistula disease and undertake a number of conservative and operative treatment modalities including Infra red coagulation, banding, stapled haemorrhoidectomy and HALO.

I have wide experience in the open and laparoscopic management of gallstone disease and its presentation as cholecystitis or biliary colic developing an acute service for these conditions during the course of my surgical training.

In the course of my consultant career I have maintained an interest in teaching and training and held the post of Professor of Surgery in 2006 at The All Asia Institute of Medicine Science and Technology in 2006.

I held a number of senior management roles within the Barnet & Chase Farm NHS Trust, including the Clinical Management Group Chair for Surgery 2004 -2007 and Clinical Director for Surgery 2007-2010 prior to being appointed as Medical Director from 2010-2014. Following the acquisition of the Barnet and Chase Farm Hospital Trust by the Royal Free Hospital in 2014 I was Deputy Medical Director of the combined organisation from 2014-2016. During this period of management I was closely involved in developing systems of clinical governance and infection control processes for the two organisations.
