Mr Ian Simmons

Consultant Ophthalmologist

BVSc MB ChB FRCO

I am a consultant ophthalmologist at Spire Leeds Hospital and specialise in paediatric ophthalmology.
Please note I see patients on an outpatient consultation basis only, I no longer offer surgical procedures at Spire Leeds Hospital.

I initially trained as a veterinary surgeon but decided to retrain as a doctor to become a human ophthalmologist. My senior house officer years were split between Manchester (where I studied medicine) and Birmingham.

I did my higher surgical training in Yorkshire. During my fellowship year, I spent six months working with the paediatric oncologists in St James University Hospital in Leeds and six months at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. There I studied paediatric ophthalmology and paediatric ophthalmic oncology.

I received my CCST in July 1999 and began work as a consultant at Clayton Hospital in Wakefield in December 1999.

I moved to Leeds in June 2001. I have co-written two major textbooks which were published in 2001. One is on cataract surgery and the other concerns anterior segment reconstruction including a substantial medico-legal section.

My NHS timetable incorporates operating lists where I perform paediatric surgery and adult strabismus operations. I also run paediatric, adult ocular motility and general ophthalmology clinics. I am the director of the regional post-graduate education programme for ophthalmology. I am also the clinical director for eye services in Leeds.

I enjoy photography and film. I am hoping to start my third screenplay soon when the pressure of having four teenage children eases off. I am on the board of Yorkshire Eye Research and I am involved in a project in Uganda treating children with eye cancer.
