Specialises in
My practice includes all aspects of ophthalmology, though I have a particular interest in childhood eye disorders, squint surgery and small incision day case cataract surgery. I have been a Consultant Ophthalmologist since 1998, and took up my present post at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Trust in Brighton in 2008.
I specialise in Paediatric Ophthalmology, Squint and Neuro-Ophthalmology. My surgical practice involves cataract surgery in adults and children, and I perform 400 operations per year, the vast majority in adults. I also specialise in the diagnosis, management and correction of squints in both children and adults, and perform excision of lid lumps, including dermoid cysts and chalazia, and probing and syringing of tear ducts in infants.
At Spire I am happy to diagnose and advise on all conditions in children, and most childhood squints do not require surgery. My capsular rupture and endophthalmitis incidence/rate has been 0% in the 22 years that I have been operating at Spire. Please note Spire Harpenden's policy on children under 16 years of age.
I trained at St Bartholomew's Hospital qualifying in 1987. I then underwent postgraduate training at St Mary's University College, The Royal Free, The National Hospital for Neurology and Moorfields Hospitals. I am a member of The Royal College of Physicians and a Fellow of The Royal College of Ophthalmology.
In Brighton I perform the full range of paediatric surgery, and many families enjoy the specialist paediatric experience at the Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital.
Some of the principal treatments carried out by Mr J Dominic Heath at Spire include:
