Mr Keith Borowsky

I have been practising orthopaedics for 35 years and have been a consultant for 27 years, working in both academic institutions and in private practice. I offer expertise for all shoulder and elbow arthroscopic and reconstructive procedures, as well as conservative non-surgical management with ultrasound guided injections and specialised physiotherapy.

Over 14 years as a substantive consultant at Medway Maritime Hospital, I established a shoulder and elbow service for both arthroscopic and reconstructive procedures and acted as Clinical Lead Clinician and Head of Clinical Governance for the department. I then took sabbatical leave to develop private research and am now developing a shoulder replacement for fractures. I have broad experience in orthopaedics and specialise in both conservative management with ultrasound guided injection and both arthroscopic and open surgery. I currently perform around 200 procedures per year and I divide my time between practice, clinical work and research.

I have broad experience in both arthroscopic and open reconstructive surgery of both the shoulder and elbow - which I have regularly practiced both on the NHS and privately since 1998.

In addition to my clinical work, I have also worked as an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Brighton and Sussex Medical School - where I have performed extensive mechanical studies on fractures of the shoulder, that have been the basis of acceptance of two articles in the International Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery. The first article outlines an interpretation of the current problem with shoulder replacement for fractures. This article also won the prize for Best Podium Presentation at the British Shoulder and Elbow Society meeting. The second article outlines a potential solution. I also practice in the Medico-legal field and have a keen interest in both injury compensation and medical negligence. I particularly enjoy working with the team at Spire Alexandra Hospital and my patients in the quest for reliving pain and restoring function.

I am the leader, designer and co-ordinator of an initiative to develop a new shoulder replacement implant for fractures of the proximal humerus (shoulder). This is a challenging problem that particularly affects elderly women who tend to have osteoporotic bone. Treatment of these fractures is internationally recognised as an unsolved problem in orthopaedics. I am also involved in research into the problem of massive rotator cuff tears and possible prosthetic solutions for this.

Most of my initial research has been at Brighton and Sussex Medical School in a position of Honorary Senior Lecturer. I have also gained experience in Solid Works 3D design in order to further research into prosthetic devices. I also practice in the Medico-legal field and have a keen interest in both injury compensation and medical negligence.

I have been a Consultant at Spire Alexandra Hospital for 20 years and one of the most important things about this hospital is the tone - this is a hospital whose staff know each other well and are not only experts in what they do, but have the time to care and listen on an individual basis. I have seen the difference this makes to treatment and how people appreciate this.
