Specialises in

  • Knee replacement
  • Hip replacement surgery

I qualified from the University of Oxford in 1996 having spent seven years at medical school, including a year of research. I completed my Orthopaedic training in South East Scotland where I developed a particular interest in lower limb surgery. I have always had an interest in engineering in Orthopaedics and gained an MSc in Orthopaedic Engineering in 2006. During my training I spent a year working as a senior fellow at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney where I gained valuable experience in hip and knee replacement and in particular complex revision (redo) surgery. I have had a wide exposure to different forms of joint replacement including new articulations such as ceramic on ceramic hip replacement, hip resurfacing, computer assisted surgery and partial replacement of the knee joint.

In 2005 I was awarded a European Travelling Fellowship by the British Hip Society, which I spent visiting the ENDO-Klinik in Hamburg. In 2007 I was fortunate enough to be chosen to be the Edinburgh North American Travelling Fellow. I am a faculty member on national and international Orthopaedic courses, a course director for Advanced Trauma Life Support and act as a reviewer for a number of Orthopaedic Journals. At the Royal Infirmary I am involved in the Scottish Patient Safety Programme and sit on the SE Scotland Orthopaedic training committee as well as running the teaching programme for trainee Orthopaedic surgeons.

I started work as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh in 2009. I have a busy NHS practice, which mirrors my private practice. My elective practice deals almost exclusively with hip and knee surgery, including all forms of joint replacement, arthroscopy and the treatment of early arthritis. To ensure high standards are maintained my results are audited locally and nationally. I form part of the internationally renowned Orthopaedic Trauma Unit at the Royal Infirmary, caring for many patients with upper limb, spinal and lower limb fractures and soft tissue injuries. I have many active research interests, focused on my areas of surgical expertise.

I live in Edinburgh with my wife and three children. At University I enjoyed sport, including rowing and hill walking and I still play a lot of sport including cycling (road) and golf. I take great joy in spending time with my family.
