BMedSci, BMBS, MSc, FRCS(Tr&Orth), MFSEM(UK)
I grew up in Manchester before attending Nottingham Medical School. In 2009, I underwent higher surgical training on the Bristol Rotation and was awarded fellowship in Trauma and Orthopaedic surgery. I developed an interest in sport injuries early in my career and was awarded a Masters degree with Merit from the University of Bath in Sports and Exercise Medicine. I travelled to Perth for sub-speciality fellowship training where I worked with some of the world's leading pioneers in tendon pathology at the University of Western Australia. I was involved in the management of athletes and elite soldiers and developed my keyhole and open surgery techniques.
I have been a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Wrightington Hospital for five years. Wrightington is one of five centres of excellence for orthopaedic surgery in the UK. I have a highly specialist shoulder surgery practice and routinely manage complex cases from other surgeons (tertiary referrals) and revision cases.
I have a particular interest in advanced arthroscopic techniques (keyhole) for shoulder surgery and sports injuries. I also specialise in shoulder joint replacement surgery including total shoulder replacement, reverse replacement and revision replacement. I routinely treat professional athletes and work closely with their rehabilitation teams. I believe in a multidisciplinary approach to assessment, treatment and rehabilitation to ensure the highest standard of care. With this approach I am able to manage over 70% of patients without the need for surgery. I believe in working closely with industry partners to develop the practice of shoulder surgery. I am currently developing new techniques in tendon reattachment (tenodesis), bone reconstruction in shoulder joint replacement and I am on the design team for a new clavicle plating system.
I am actively involved in research and have published numerous scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals and have presented work both nationally and internationally. I am scientific peer reviewer for numerous national and international journals as well as the National Institute for Health Research and Arthritis UK.
