I am a dual fellowship trained Consultant Hand and Wrist Surgeon, with a busy NHS practice based at Wirral University Teaching Hospital.  In my NHS capacity, I treat all aspects of general orthopaedic trauma and fracture fixation. Electively, I provide a service for specialist hand and wrist problems both in the NHS and at Spire Murrayfield. I have received specialist training to use minimally invasive techniques for multiple conditions. A minimally invasive technique enables me to complete a large range of operations under local anaesthetic, without the need to be put to sleep, which for a lot of the treatments would have been the traditional approach. This allows for fantastic functional assessment during surgery, reduces the potential risks associated with, and the additional time spent in hospital following a general anaesthetic.

I have a specialist interest in the management of all aspects of hand and wrist pathology, including arthritis, Dupuytrens disease, trigger digits, and peripheral nerve compressions and injuries.

Specifically, I have a special interest and experience in the following areas:

  • using Wide Awake local anaesthetic techniques, to expand the range of surgeries that can be achieved without the need for a general anaesthetic. This provides excellent functional assessment during surgery, and crucially, avoids all of the potential downsides of a general anaesthetic.
  • Dupuytren's disease.  I offer a whole range of treatments, including specialist minimally invasive options.
  • hand and wrist arthritis, offering an entire range of services from joint injection, denervation, fusion and replacement surgeries, including of the fingers, thumb base, and the wrist.
  • peripheral nerve problems throughout the body, not limited to the hand or wrist. This includes compression neuropathy, such as carpal tunnel syndrome and cubital tunnel syndrome, and can offer specialist interventions (including keyhole) in their treatment.
  • the management of scaphoid fractures and non-unions including vascularised bone grafting
  • wrist arthroscopy (Keyhole surgery) both diagnostically, and therapeutically
  • ganglion and finger lump excision
  • trigger finger

I qualified from the University of Liverpool in 2011 with an Honours degree. I completed my basic surgical training and successfully achieved my Membership exams to the Royal College in 2013. I then completed my higher surgical training on the renowned Mersey Orthopaedic rotation, completing my Fellowship exams in Orthopaedic surgery in 2019, and was then awarded the Certificate of Completion of Training in 2021 by the GMC. I developed my specialist interest by undertaking two internationally renowned fellowships in hand and wrist surgery.  One at Wrightington Hospital, an orthopaedic centre of excellence, focusing on hand and peripheral nerve surgery, followed by a dual specialty (orthopaedic and plastic surgery) senior hand fellowship at the internationally renowned Pulvertaft Hand Centre in Derby.

I continue to develop my skills in hand surgery, to learn the most up to date techniques, including arthroscopic and endoscopic (key hole) surgery techniques, ultrasound guided treatments, and thumb base arthroplasty (Joint replacement).

I am a clinical lecturer for the University of Liverpool and undertake face to face and virtual lectures and discussions groups on topics related to hand and wrist surgery, and general trauma and orthopaedics. I also take an interest in the training of the future generation of surgeons. I am a clinical and educational supervisor for the foundation and core surgical trainee programme, and I sit on the Annual Review of Clinical Progression panel (ARCP) for the Mersey training deanery in Trauma and Orthopaedics. I also run a not-for-profit national clinical interview course, to help prepare the next generation of surgical trainees for the rigorous interview process.

I am a member of the British Society for Surgery to the Hand (BSSH), the British Elbow and Shoulder Society (BESS), and the British Orthopaedic Society (BOA). I have published multiple original research articles and presented at multiple meetings.

I am originally from Northern Ireland, but I have lived in Merseyside for 18 years with my wife, and daughter. I enjoy spending time outdoors, regularly going hiking in North Wales, the Peaks, and the Lakes. I am a keen open water swimmer, regularly training at Manley Mere in Cheshire. I played rugby union for many years at school, university, and club level but unfortunately had to retire from a back injury. I am still a big fan of the sport, and go to live matches regularly both Premiership and following Ulster Rugby in the URC.
