Specialises in
I have been a consultant for three years. I specialise in hip replacement and complex hip revision surgery. I have specialist experience in the management of hip arthritis and complex hip pathologies such as avascular necrosis, metastatic cancer, post-traumatic and developmental disorders requiring hip replacements. I am a revision hip surgeon specialising in the management of infected hip replacements.
Having had hip surgery myself, I can empathise with patients suffering with hip pathology. I understand the difficulties it can cause and how surgery can improve your quality of life.
I gained a broad experience in Orthopaedic and Trauma surgery while completing my training in Bristol. I completed a year of advanced arthroplasty training in Auckland, NZ, refining my hip replacement skills while learning new computer navigation techniques for knee replacement surgery. I returned to Bristol for a fellowship in advanced hip arthroplasty and pelvic surgery before completing a final fellowship in Major Trauma at Southmead.
I am the hip fracture lead at the Bristol Royal Infirmary and Orthopaedic lead for Silver Trauma. I am one of four surgeons running the regional centre for prosthetic hip joint infection at Southmead Hospital.
I am employed by Health Education England as the Surgical Lead for Skills and Courses for the Severn Deanery and I have responsibility for providing skills training for over 100 surgical trainees around the region.
Some of the principal treatments carried out by Mr Niall Sullivan at Spire include:

I continue to produce high quality research with strong links to the University of Bristol. My ongoing stem cell research and research on osteoarthritis and osteoporosis has been published in major scientific journals.
I have published on the biomechanics of hip and knee replacements and won a national award from the BOA for my work on developing professionalism in Trauma & Orthopaedic training. I am currently working on several projects related to prosthetic hip joint infection.
Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon, University Hospitals Bristol and Weston.
Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Avon Orthopaedic Centre, Southmead Hospital.
I live in Bristol with my wife and a couple of cats. I am a keen runner and use it as time to unwind. I enjoy all sports (watching and playing) and try to keep as active as possible. My wife and I both love music, food and time in the garden.
