MBChB, FRCSEd

Specialises in

  • Breast lumps
  • Breast pain
  • Breast screening
  • All non-cosmetic breast problems

I undertook my undergraduate medical training at the University of Edinburgh qualifying in 1999. During my basic surgical training I also worked in Northampton and Christchurch, New Zealand. My subsequent surgical training was in Edinburgh with placements in both Dundee and Glasgow.

I undertook two years of postgraduate research at the Edinburgh Breast Unit under the supervision of Professor Mike Dixon. I have been a consultant in the Edinburgh Breast Unit since 2011. I am currently acting as Clinical Director and have managerial responsibility for a team of a dozen surgeons. Collectively we treat almost 1000 new breast cancers annually.

I am also the surgical lead for the South East Scotland Screening Programme from where a large proportion of cancers are detected. I have a very keen interest in neoadjuvant endocrine therapy and subsequent breast conservation surgery employing both well-established and novel oncoplastic techniques. I work very closely with other disciplines including pathology, radiology, oncology and clinical genetics. I currently chair the Quality Improvement Team for the breast unit and have a keen interest in the safe streamlining and improvement of patient care pathways.

Consultant Breast Surgeon, Edinburgh Breast Unit, Western General Hospital, Edinburgh

I grew up in London and was educated at Colfe’s School and Epsom College. With a paediatrician and a surgeon for parents and professors of biochemistry and anatomy for grandparents, there was little chance of me ending up anywhere other than doing something in the field of medicine. However, before commencing my studies (and since) I spent much time in South West France educating myself on the fineries of peasant life, bad French and the joys of cycling the open road (without performance enhancing drugs). Since graduating I have stayed this side of the border having married Fiona Johnston, a fellow medical student, with whom I have three young children. I just about balance a busy home life with that of a busy breast surgeon.
