Mr Paul Grundy

Consultant Neurosurgeon

BM (Hons), MD, FRCS (Neurosurg)

I qualified with honours in medicine from Southampton University and then completed my basic surgical training in Oxford. My neurosurgical training was in Bristol, including a 2 year period of research, and then completed a fellowship in Melbourne. I now run a dedicated neuro-oncology practice at Wessex Neurological Centre as the lead neurosurgeon for oncology at University Hospital Southampton, covering a population of 3 million people. All of this work is multi-disciplinary and in accordance with NICE guidelines for the management of brain and CNS tumours I have introduced day-case neurosurgery for brain tumours to the UK and perform high-volumes of neuro-oncology surgery, including awake operations for tumours in the vital regions of the brain.

I have also gained formal qualifications (CertMedEd) in medical education and enjoys surgical training. I was the clinical director of Neurosciences in UHS from 2011 and 2014. I was the chairman of the National Clinical Reference Group for CNS tumours from 2013 to 2016 and was a member of the adult Neurosurgery CRG and specialised cancer CRG. I became Divisional Clinical Director for Neuro-sciences, Trauma and Orthopaedics, Radiology plus Cardiovascular and Thoracic in 2014.

In 2012, I was voted by the HSJ awards as the UK’s Clinical Leader of the Year and in 2013 was listed as one of the top 100 most influential medical leaders in the UK. I also work with a number of Brain Tumour charities and am one of the patrons for the charitable organisation BrainsTrust. I am working exclusively with Spire Southampton Hospital to run a private cranial neurosurgery program with some of the latest and most advances equipment available for the treatment of brain tumours.
