Virtual consultations:
I am a consultant adult and paediatric ear, nose and throat surgeon at the Spire Bristol Hospital and also at the University Hospitals Bristol NHS Trust working at St Michael’s Hospital, Bristol Royal Infirmary, Bristol Royal Hospital for Children and Southmead Hospital. I am President of the British Society of Otology and President Elect of the section of Otology, Royal Society of Medicine.
I work with both adults and children, and I have sub-specialty interests in ear disease and diseases of the nose and sinuses. I am the director and founder of the West of England Cochlear Implant Programme, and also established the Tinnitus Clinic at Southmead Hospital.
I have developed very close links with a group of other professionals, such as a hearing therapist, voice therapists, dedicated theatre nurse and very experienced adult and paediatric anaesthetists, as well as other consultants, to provide a multi-disciplinary team approach to my patients’ care. I have worked with Fiona Watts, the Hearing Therapist since 1994 and she provides specialist therapy for my patients with hearing problems, tinnitus and balance disorders. All my clinics have audiological support for hearing tests.
I come from a medical family and qualified in medicine from the University of Bristol in 1981. After house jobs in Bristol, I spent a year teaching anatomy at the University of Bristol. I completed my basic surgical training at the Bristol Royal Infirmary and the Bristol Children’s Hospital.
My specialist surgical training in ENT was carried out at University College Hospital and the Middlesex Hospitals, London, as well as Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children. I had additional sub-specialist training with a fellowship in paediatric ENT at Great Ormond Street Hospital, London, a fellowship in otology and cochlear research at the University of Michigan in the USA, and a fellowship in rhinoplasty, facial plastic surgery and sinus surgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, Texas.
I was appointed as a consultant in 1994, and I have developed a specialist practice in complex ear disease and deafness, receiving many tertiary referrals from other consultants. I have also developed a specialist practice in nose and sinus surgery and all aspects of paediatric ENT. I continue to carry out general ear, nose and throat clinics and surgery as well.
I have been very involved in the training of ENT surgeons, and was a member of the Specialist Advisory Committee at the Royal College of Surgeons (2012-2017) and previously the chairman of the South West Regional Specialist Training Committee (2011-2016). I continue to be active in clinical research, particularly related to cochlear implants and regularly lecture, both nationally, and internationally.
