I am a consultant urological surgeon and lead clinician for urology at Epsom and St Helier NHS Trust. I joined the trust in 2002 where I set up a laparoscopic urology unit that is now performing all the renal laparoscopy for Epsom, St Helier and Kingston Hospitals.
My main areas of expertise are adrenal and kidney surgery. I am one of the highest volume kidney surgeons in the UK, performing in excess of 100 nephrectomy, partial nephrectomy and nephroureterectomy procedures per year. My other clinical interests include oncology, reconstructive surgery and surgery for benign prostate disease. I introduced the Green light laser prostatectomy (PVP) at Epsom and St Helier and more recently at Spire St Anthony’s Hospital.
I studied medicine at Stellenbosch University in South Africa. I completed my basic surgical training in the UK, obtaining the FRCS in London in 1996. I trained in Urology at Groote Schuur Hospital and the University of Cape Town and was appointed consultant urologist and senior lecturer to Tygerberg Hospital and Stellenbosch University Medical School in 2000. My training in laparoscopic urology included attachments with Indirber Gill in Cleveland and Chris Eden in Basingstoke.
My research towards my Master’s degree involved the use of collagen matrix grafts in endoscopic urethral reconstruction. I am a senior lecturer at St George’s hospital medical school and an examiner in the final MBBS. I lecture regularly on laparoscopic training courses in the UK, Europe and South Africa.
In 2002, I was awarded the Storz Prize, a travelling fellowship awarded once every two years by the South African Urological Association to the outstanding young urologist in South Africa.
