I entered the medical school at the Universita degli Studi G d Annunzio and qualified as a Doctor of Medicine and Surgery in 2000. From Italy, I returned to Thessaloniki, Greece, to complete my surgical training and then spent a year of national service in the Greek army, providing expertise and support to the health service.

In 2006, I undertook my initial training in Trauma and Orthopaedic surgery in Asclepieion Hospital, a large and busy hospital with a long tradition in Orthopaedics, where I developed my passion for spinal surgery. During my residency I travelled to Salt Lake City, Utah, USA where I spent six months at the Spinal Department of University of Utah under the supervision of the internationally renowned Professor Darrel Brodke.

In 2011, I was awarded the specialty title in Orthopaedics and Trauma surgery and in the same year I returned to Utah to further specialise in spinal surgery. In the following four years I was entirely dedicated to further spinal training and research, focused on preventing complications in Adult Spinal Deformity. I published several peer-reviewed articles in internationally recognised scientific journals, presented my research findings at international conferences and contributed chapters to various books in established medical literature.

I was honoured to have my work recognised in 2012 by the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS) with the famous Russel Hibbs award. In my time in Utah I completed the AO Spine North America research fellowship and clinical spinal fellowship of the University of Utah under the guidance of Professor Darrel Brodke, Chair of education in AO Spine North America. I also had the privilege to gain experience in complex spinal surgery, from skull to pelvis, dealing with the full spectrum of spinal pathologies, including the highly complex conditions of ‘degenerative scoliosis’ and ‘fixed sagittal imbalance.

In 2014 I decided to return to Europe and in November 2014 I was appointed as a Spinal Consultant at the Royal University Hospital, Liverpool, where there is a wealth of expertise and experience, providing huge opportunities for me to further develop my career. It is also strategically located to facilitate my links with European research and, of course, my beloved homeland of Greece.

Additional information

I was born in 1975 on the tiny, but beautiful Greek island of Alonnissos in the Aegean Sea. I am married to Sofia and have a young family of two daughters, Zoe (six) and Marianna (one), who was born in Salt Lake City shortly before we arrived in Liverpool. My wife Sofia has studied economics and is a graduate from Thessaloniki University but currently is working full-time making sure our daughters grow up well and happy.

Moving to Liverpool has brought both professional and personal happiness. I am a passionate football fan, who follows AEK, Athens, although I regularly visit Anfield to watch Liverpool FC and look forward to AEK and Liverpool meeting in the Champions League at some point in the future. Since arriving in Liverpool we have been made to feel that we are part of a vibrant city; with such great culture and history. It is very clear that Liverpool is a special city, a truly global city representing many different cultures and a city whose people have made us, as a family, feel welcome and valued. I want to contribute to the this city’s vision and future by being at the forefront of the Spinal service of Merseyside, providing first class service for a first class city.
