I am a Consultant Thoracic Surgeon and qualified at Sheffield University in 1993. I undertook higher surgical training in cardiothoracic surgery in Yorkshire and was appointed to a substantive consultant position in 2007 in one of the largest regional centres for thoracic surgery in Europe.
I perform the full range of thoracic surgery, covering both benign and malignant conditions. The bulk of my practice involves treating people with primary lung cancer but an increasing part deals with removing metastatic cancer that has spread to the lungs.
I perform minimally invasive (keyhole) surgery where possible and along with my colleagues am keen to develop minimally invasive treatment for atrial fibrillation. I am particularly interested in quality of life after thoracic surgery, and patient satisfaction, including reducing hospital length of stay.
I recognise the importance of continuous professional development to ensure that I am delivering the highest standard of care to my patients.
Some of the principal treatments carried out by Mr Richard Milton at Spire include:
Thoracic surgery
Other treatments
Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh
Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery of GB and Ireland
European Association of Cardiothoracic Surgery
Consultant thoracic surgeon, Leeds Teaching Hospitals
Honorary senior lecturer, University of Leeds
My overriding passion is spending time with my young family. I also enjoy travelling, eating out and fine wine (time permitting). I am a novice skier and have been for over 10 years!
