"I enjoy the atmosphere at Spire Parkway Hospital where the staff genuinely care about achieving the best experience for patients and go the extra mile to ensure they feel well looked after."
I am a Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer and was appointed to my current NHS post at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust in 2018.
I perform a full remit of general work within my specialty including routine dentoalveolar surgery, oral medicine, benign salivary gland disease and the management of complex facial trauma in a designated Major Trauma Centre (MTC).
I have sub-specialty interests in the management of non-melanoma skin cancer, temporomandibular joint surgery (including custom total alloplastic temporomandibular joint replacements) and medical/dental education.
I have completed national Training Interface Group (TIG) Fellowships in Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgery and the Management of Skin Cancer in Nottingham and Leeds respectively.
As a member of the Solihull skin cancer multi-disciplinary team (MDT) I provide surgical input into the care of non-melanoma skin cancer patients including post-Mohs reconstruction of defects of the head and neck region.
I have performed 500 excisions and reconstructions for non-melanoma skin cancer and my clear margin rate for conventional surgery is 97%. In addition, I have performed over 1,000 oral surgery procedures with no reported incidences of permanent numbness following third molar surgery.
My other sub-specialty interest is in facial pain and temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and I provide treatments including conservative management, intramuscular botulinum toxin (Botox/Dysport) for myofascial pain, intra-articular steroid injections of the TMJ, arthrocentesis, arthroscopy, open arthroplasty and total alloplastic joint replacement of the TMJ.
I currently occupy the position of Deputy Clinical Service Lead (CSL) for my specialty at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust where I assist the CSL in ensuring the department runs smoothly and effectively in delivering high quality care to patients. I have also recently been appointed as Education Lead for higher trainees in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in the West Midlands region.
As well as my clinical activity, I have an academic commitment to the University of Birmingham as an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer, coordinating the Human Disease module in the undergraduate Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) degree at the University, ensuring that the dentists of the future understand the breadth of knowledge required in infection, pathology, pharmacology, medicine, surgery and therapeutics and preparing them to care for patients holistically in their future careers. I am also both a Senior Academic Tutor and Personal Mentor for undergraduate medical students at the University, sitting on admissions interview panels and exam boards.
At a postgraduate level, I am an examiner for the Member of the Faculty of Dental Surgery (MFDS) examinations with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and an Assigned Educational Supervisor for junior trainees. I have co-authored textbooks on subjects as diverse as interview skills for dentists and revision guides for the FRCS(OMFS) exit examination. I am regularly in peer-reviewed journals and am an external member of the UNESCO Chair of Bioethics Unit based at Edge Hill University in Ormskirk. Additionally, I have recently been appointed as an Associate Editor for the British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and I continue to publish and present my work widely.
