I have been working in the NHS since 2002 and have trained in various neurosurgical centres across the UK including the Wessex Neurosurgical Centre Southampton, Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, Royal Victoria Hospital Newcastle, James Cook University Teaching Hospital Middlesborough and Ninewells University Hospital Dundee. I was appointed a Consultant Neurosurgeon at Hull University Teaching Hospitals in 2017 subspecialising in complex spinal surgery.
I undertook 3 years of research in developmental cell biology and neural stem cells at the Wellcome Trust Research Centre in University of Dundee and The Sir James Spence Institute, University of Newcastle (2009–2012). I undertook the Post-CCT Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) approved Senior Spinal Fellowship at the Golden Jubilee Regional Spinal Centre at James Cook University Hospital, Middleborough (2017 – 2018). This was a combined Orthopaedics and Neurosurgery Spinal Fellowship focusing on adolescent and adult deformity, minimally invasive surgery and all aspect complex spinal neurosurgery.
My current NHS practise involves dealing with all aspect of emergency and elective spinal conditions in addition to neurosurgery on-call services. My area of special interests includes minimally invasive surgery, deformity surgery, chiari malformation, vertebroplasty, cervical arthoplasty, trauma, degenerative spinal conditions, neuromodulation including spinal cord stimulation and intrathecal morphine and baclofen.
I was the Neurosurgery representative on the Regional Major Trauma Board (2020 – 2021). I am currently the principal tutor in Neurosurgery responsible for overseeing neurosurgical registrars training in Hull.
I am an Advance Trauma Life Support Instructor and regularly undertake charity medical outreach work in sub-saharan Africa (Nigeria, The Gambia and Senegal) which has been extensively covered in several national and international media outlets including the BBC.
