Mr Stephen Blair

Consultant General Surgeon

MBBS, LRCP, MRCS, MS, FRCS (Ed), FRCS (Eng)

"Spire Murrayfield, Wirral Hospital is an excellent, friendly hospital which enables very high quality care for the individual requirements of each patient."

I have been a Consultant General Surgeon with a specialist interest in vascular surgery for over 20 years. I am an international expert on the management of leg ulcers and I have helped pioneer new treatments of varicose vein surgery as well as doing research on arterial disease, hernias, etc. I have recently started modernising Emergency General Surgery on the Wirral, to give patients a better experience and better outcomes.

I aim to provide the highest quality care for general and vascular surgery. I use the most up to date treatments for varicose veins including endovenous ablation as ambulatory care under a local anaesthetic. For more complex cases most are managed as daycase surgery for lumps, bumps, arterial disease and hernias. I provide state of the art leg ulcer care with the help of well trained nurses.

I have operated on over 4,000 varicose veins and 1,000 hernias with excellent outcomes in terms of post operative recovery and long term success. I treat over 1,000 patients a year with general surgical and vascular problems in my NHS and private practice with audited good results

I am the Senior General Surgeon at Arrowe Park Hospital, I have held numerous managerial positions over the years but have handed those over to concentrate on improving clinical care.

I am a trustee of the Rock of Joy Trust which works in Uganda to provide education and healthcare to some of the most deprived areas. In addition to my clinical and charity work, I am pleased to be an Honorary Lecturer at Liverpool University.

Outside of work I am very involved in the church and community life of Heswall. I play tennis and golf and I have a lovely grown up family. I am a trustee of the Rock of Joy trust, which is a Wirral based charity which provides aid and support for deprived children at two schools in Uganda. We take large youth groups to Uganda every two years so that they can experience the developing world and develop their own character. I also do rural medical work in Uganda, where no medical care is available.
